GAME NOTES FROM 12 - 11 OT Win AT SOUTH WESTERN
None of the 9 games played this season by the varsity boys have been
close matches going into the 4th quarter. The coaching staff, led by Chris
Snyder, had yet to observe how the Comets handled the pressure of a
close game, but on Saturday afternoon in Hanover, against the Mustangs
from South Western High School, they found out and were very pleased to
say the least!
In a see saw game that had the Comets battle back to tie or take a
lead from 2 and 4 goal deficits, they won their 7th game of the
season by a score of 12-11 in sudden death overtime against one of York
County's premier lacrosse programs which had just one defeat on the
season thus far.
The winning goal was scored by senior Kier Blevins' , his second of
the game, just one minute into the overtime period despite the
Comets playing a "man down" due to a penalty.
The defense started the winning play as senior Derek Putt stripped the ball
from his man behind the Mustang's goal, then cleared it to Sophomore Nick
Reaney who hit Blevins on a dead run and Kier broke behind his man to
create a fast break then fired the game winner over the South
Western goalie's left shoulder leading to the biggest on the field
victory celebration for the Comets this season.
Adding to the offensive efforts for the Comets was David Maisel who had 3
goals while Mike Cotich, and Kyle Rubell matched Blevins' total of 2
tallies.
Adding one goal each were Spencer Barnett, Mike Curtin and Josh
Steffy. Adding assists for Penn Manor were Blevins with two,
while Barnett, Rubell, Jeff Foster, (who won 10 of 12 face-offs) and
Drew Giberson added one each.
Comet Goalie Pete Deluca made 12 saves on the day, including two big ones
in the last minute of regulation to help send the game to sudden death!
The energy from the varsity win carried over to the JV game as the young
Comets overpowered the Mustangs by a score of 11 to 3!
The next two boys lacrosse games are on the road as they travel to
Warwick for an important LL League match on Tuesday and to Chester County
powerhouse, Bishop Shanahan in Downingtown on Thursday.
They return to Comet field for their next home match, the 4th Annual Back
Yard Bash vs. Lampeter Strasburg on Saturday night the 19th.
